In Punjab, a 17-year-old Muslim girl has married a 36-year-old man in a Muslim ceremony. The family members were angry and objected. The couple then approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for protection.
The High Court has clarified that people below the age of 18 can also get married on the basis of Muslim marriage literature and various court decisions. He is also free to marry anyone under Muslim personal law. Under the Muslim Personal Law, a Muslim girl can get married even at the age of 15.

The decision was taken by High Court Justice Alka Sari while disposing of a petition seeking protection of a Mohali-loving Muslim couple. The couple got married on January 21 according to Muslim custom. This is their first marriage. His family and relatives are not happy with this marriage and they are risking their lives and freedom.
He had on January 21 issued a memorandum to the Mohali SSP seeking security, but the SSP did not take any action. Due to this he had to resort to the High Court. The High Court said a young Muslim girl can get married under the age of 18.
